How Do I Update to “in Studio” versions?

You’ll need to download and install Topaz Studio (a FREE application) to use the “in Studio” updated versions of the Plugins. You can use the buttons below to download the latest version.

Note: This article has been updated since the two Topaz sites (topazlabs.com and web.topazlabs.com) were merged. Now you only need to confirm ownership of your products under your account before logging into Topaz Studio.

Frequently asked Questions and Issues

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][qodef_accordion style=”boxed_accordion”][qodef_accordion_tab title=”If i own a officially migrated plugin do I have to purchase the “in Studio“ pack?”][vc_column_text]No, As always, the updates from Plugin to in Studio is 100% free, as part of your free upgrades for life! You’ll need to download and install Topaz Studio (a FREE application) to use the “in Studio” update. If you are just getting started with Topaz Studio, you can download Topaz Studio here:
https://topazlabs.com/downloads/

NOTE: you will need Topaz Studio installed to claim your Pro Adjustments that make up the “in Studio” updates.[/vc_column_text][/qodef_accordion_tab][qodef_accordion_tab title=”Does this Update the Standalone Plugins?”][vc_column_text]No, this is an upgrade to a newer version of each product that’s only available through Topaz Studio. You can still happily use the plugin versions, but the updates we made are not possible inside of that old engine. If you’d prefer not to use Studio or forgo the upgrade you may continue to use the older plugin version, however, once a product is migrated into Studio, the plugin only version won’t be updated further. All future updates will be made to the “in Studio” versions.[/vc_column_text][/qodef_accordion_tab][qodef_accordion_tab title=”Why is it only available as an upgrade in Topaz Studio?”][vc_column_text]The short answer is:
The updates we’re making are not possible to create inside of that old engine. Even if we updated the plugins to use the new engine, as a standalone product, it would be the same thing you get with the “in Studio” versions, but without access to the rest of the tools available in Studio.

It would also significantly slow down your workflow, be use instead of using the integrated toolset you’d still have to launch each new product as a standalone product, then render back into the application as a flattened image, it’s much slower and less flexible.

The Long Answer:
We understand being comfortable with a specific interface, and not wanting to adopt a new workflow.  That’s why we’ve gone to extra lengths to ensure you can still launch your plugins directly from your preferred host editor, simply launching into that workflow though the Studio framework.  However, standalone launch will require Studio for any product that gets the In Studio designation.

This change was necessary to allow continued development of Topaz products.  Free updates for life is a costly promise to keep, and we’re committed to keeping it.  However, there’s not a lot we can do with the old model – it was extremely expensive and slow to work on.  So slow and expensive, that with our highest profits, we were still only able to get about 3 to 5 major updates released a year.  This change enables us to update products simultaneously, as well as speed up processing simultaneously when we find an improvement we can make to the engine.

Sure, there’s benefit to having one application do just one thing.  But we believe delivering a workflow that is responsive to our customer’s needs takes priority over the individual application model and its specific benefits.  We are very aware that our strengths have long lied in our ability to do very specific editing, very well.  We intend to continue that effort.

We can’t convince you to update.  We’ll keep hosting the previous version on the Previous Versions page if you need to re-download the previous version for any reason.  However, all new development to our product lines will take place in Studio.  We’re doing our best to introduce our customers to the latest technology we’re working on, and that delivery is really only possible through the Topaz Studio framework.[/vc_column_text][/qodef_accordion_tab][qodef_accordion_tab title=”I’ve Updated but i’m not seeing my integrated item in the Workflow panel.”][vc_column_text]The most likely cause for this is that your database isn’t syncing, you can trigger this manually by restarting the Topaz Studio application again.[/vc_column_text][/qodef_accordion_tab][qodef_accordion_tab title=”The program is not displaying correctly on my 4k monitor.”][vc_column_text]Your resolution is detected in Topaz Studio when you first run the application, but sometimes this doesn’t apply on the first run, this is a known issue we’re working on resolving. Please close and relaunch Topaz Studio and it should solve this problem.[/vc_column_text][/qodef_accordion_tab][qodef_accordion_tab title=”How do i download Topaz Studio?”][vc_column_text]Don’t have Topaz Studio? Topaz Studio is free to download and use with 11 free adjustments and a ton of tools! 1. After having several issues with the first couple of “In Studio” updates, I am very happy to report that the update for Simplify In Studio was smooth as silk. Thanks for smoothing out the process.

  2. It seems that now I can only use old versions of your plugins with Photoshop. If I want to use the latest versions I have to install your Studio application and work on an image outside of Photoshop. Correct??? This wasn’t in the agreement when I purchased your plug ins, they were plugins for Photoshop, not for some other photo application that didn’t even exist when I purchased the plug ins. I feel ripped off and will never buy another Topaz product. I’ve used Photoshop for almost 20 years and I’m not about to change my workflow now. I will uninstall your plugins and would like my money back.

    1. Frank,
Thats not the case at all you can still use Studio and each of the “in Studio” products in Photoshop, before you would go to Filters > Topaz Labs > Simplify. Now you go to Filters > Topaz Studio > Simplify. Instead of opening in the Simplify 4 platform, it will open through the Topaz Studio platform, however, it’s still accessible the same way, presets on the left, adjustments on the right. WE’re a plugin company, we’re not going to keep you from being able to use our products through Photoshop.

  3. How do I know if I have the latest version of Topaz Studio?

    1. Hello Lois,
You can always open Topaz Studio, then under the Help menu click “Check for updates”. If you’re still not sure you can check the version number in the title bar against the version listed on the downloads page here: https://topazlabs.com/downloads

  4. It appears that these “in Studio” applications (and any saved Effects) are only available when connected to the internet. Is that the case? If not, why did they not appear when my internet was down?

    1. Kristine,
They do work when offline. You have access to all adjustments and effects when you work offline as they are stored in a local file on your machine, when you connect to the net again that database is synced with the community.

  5. Hi.

Will Studio update my plugins in photoshop? My Photoshop plug for Simplify – when I select menu/update, it crashes Simplify 4

    1. Don,
No the update is only to the “in Studio” version not to the older plugin versions, please see the frequently asked questions section of the article for more information.

  6. Hi Heath and Team :),
I have several Topaz plugins purchased throughout the last 2 years that I use regularly, (through using Serif’s Affinity Photo) and have downloaded Topaz Studio so I can receive the latest updates, however , I can’t open the program as I don’t seem to have Open GL 3.3 on my system! My Toshiba laptop is 5 years old and still running strong, so are there any versions of Topaz Studio I can use that will accept the updated Topaz plugins? I know I’m probably asking a lot, however, I can’t afford a new computer/laptop. 🙂

    1. Hello Claire,
Unfortunately, Topaz Studio and all “in Studio” versions of the plugins require at least OpenGL 3.3 to run (which was released in 2010). We use many of the tools available in the toolset for core processes in the application. However you can continue using the older versions of the plugins on your system just like you always have, and when you have a compatible machine can upgrade to the “in Studio” versions at that time.

  7. Having problem again with site not recognizing that I own all of the topaz plug-ins. Simplify is not showing up in my list of owned adjustments again. And I am being shown that I have to pay to get Simplify in the adjustments store. Yesterday I wrote a request ticket with screenshots and that request is not showing up in my list of requests so I guess I have to do it again and wait for a week or two. Very frustrating process as I have had issues with all four of the studio adjustment roll outs…

  8. Very reluctant to purchase additional Topaz Studio products. Studio has not functioned properly since PS 2018 CC came out. It can not be used as a PS plugin more than once without having to close PS and restart it each time you want to use Topaz Studio. It is simply to much of a pain to use this way. Hopefully Topaz can resolve this issue be long. It has already been a month at least. Until then, no more Topaz products.

    1. Brad, this issue has been resolved in the 1.5.3 update we released 2 weeks ago. Please open studio and click Help > Check for updates. It should also notify you when an update is available when you go to close the application. The issue is solely with the plugin files created by the application, please update to the latest version (with photoshop closed).

  9. I have followed the instructions and I am still not getting Simplify to show in the panel. Any advice?

    1. Hello James,
Sorry you’re still having trouble with Topaz Studio. Have you made sure you’re on the latest version? It should be version 1.5.3. If you’re not could you download and run the installer again to make sure you’re on the latest version and that you have all correct files. Please make sure you’ve closed Photoshop during the install.

  10. Your web page (https://topazlabs.com/introducing-ai-clear/) states: “Topaz AI Clear™ is available as a Pro adjustment with Topaz Studio, a standalone photo editor as well as a plugin for Photoshop CS4+, Elements 6+, Creative Cloud, and as an external editor for Lightroom.”

No matter how much I look, it seems the only version available is a menu item within standalone Topaz Studio. I am ONLY interested in AI Clear IF I can use it as a plug-in within Photoshop. Is that available? If so, how do I buy it and install it?

    1. Topaz studio can be used as ps or lr plugin.
