When to Use Topaz Gigapixel AI in Your Workflow

We recommend using Gigapixel AI at the end of your photo editing workflow to finish an image that has been edited in Topaz Studio, Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, or other image editing software. This will minimize the amount of work needed to fine-tune the image post-upsampling!

How Topaz Gigapixel AI Works

Traditional up-scale methods use “interpolation” (bi-cubic, Lanczos, fractal, etc.) to create higher resolution images, but exhibit limitations such as loss of detail and sharpness, which causes very pixelated and blurry upsampled images. Gigapixel AI, however, analyzes the image and recognizes details and structures and “completes” the image with AI models that we have trained in our lab!

Our AI models are trained with thousands of images with different resolutions to learn how to distinguish poorly upsampled images from high-quality upsampled images. During this training period, our models not only learn to distinguish quality, but also learn to recognize certain structures within the image. This information is committed to memory and used later as a reference to complete and achieve high-quality upsampled images.

Getting Started with Topaz JPEG to RAW AI

This article is to introduce you to and provide you with some helpful resources to using Topaz JPEG to RAW AI!

Why You’d Want to Use JPEG to RAW AI

Topaz JPEG to RAW AI allows you to edit JPEGs as if you originally shot them in RAW.

This machine-learning powered software will:

  • Recover a portion of the lost dynamic range. This will help bring back lost shadow and highlight details.

  • Expand bit depth from 8-bit to 16-bit. This will prevent posterization and banding when you adjust the contrast in your images.

  • Expand color space from sRGB to ProPhoto. The larger resulting color space allows you to better edit saturation and vibrance without any visible artifacting!

  • Remove JPEG compression artifacts. Artifacts won’t be easily visible in high-quality JPEGs, but they can completely ruin an image if they are. JPEG to RAW AI is exceptional at removing these artifacts while preserving natural image features.

  • Recover fine detail removed during the conversion process. JPEGs will often feature smoothed details due to a small sensor or heavy processing. JPEG to RAW AI can enhance image details.

When to Use JPEG to RAW AI in Your Workflow

We recommend using JPEG to RAW AI at the very beginning of your workflow. Whenever you would edit a JPEG, put it through JPEG to RAW AI first for best editing results. JPEG to RAW AI also allows batch processing, to speed up your workflow.

How JPEG to RAW AI Works

There’s normally no way of recovering lost detail. Artificial intelligence is allowing us to change that.

The easiest way to explain it is that AI approaches this problem from a very different angle. Instead of trying to reverse the information loss, which is impossible, we train a neural network to “remember” what the RAW image should look like before it’s converted to a JPEG image.

We train the neural network on a large number of high-quality RAW images together with their corresponding JPEG version so that it learns and remembers the correspondence. After training the network on enough images, the neural network will “remember” to output a higher quality image even when given a new “unseen” JPEG image as input.

It’s just like when you see a friend from far away. Though they are too far away for you to make out the details with your eyes, you can imagine or remember what your friend looks like in vivid detail!

We’re continually training our JPEG to RAW conversion model with more data, which makes it better the more time passes. You’ll get the latest and greatest when the model improves.

JPEG to RAW AI is currently the only machine-learning powered software capable of doing this.

Our goal of getting sharp images is one of the major factors we invest in great cameras and equipment, and why we’ve invested so much time in learning the best techniques!

But even with the best equipment and expert techniques, we sometimes still end up with images that could be sharper. When this happens, it’s usually caused by one of three problems: camera shake, focus issues, or general softness.

So, let’s get into Sharpen AI and how you get more out of your photos!

When to Use Sharpen AI in Your Workflow

We recommend using Sharpen AI in the middle of your workflow. Eliminating noise as a first step is key because it will ensure that you are working on a clean image! It is always important to remove any damaging defects before applying any color, detail or creative adjustments to your images.

How Sharpen AI Works

There is a reason that nobody has released an deep-learning sharpen AI tool for photographers so far.  It is quite an engineering challenge.

We trained our artificial neural network with millions of blur-sharp image pairs. The neural network eventually “remembers” what the sharp image should look like if it sees a blurry image. After months of training, the neural network produces a sharper image when given an image it has not seen before.

Using Sharpen AI

The key to getting the best results from Sharpen AI is determining the root of the cause: camera shake, focus issues, or general softness. Sharpen AI includes a separate module to handle each one.

Stabilize: natural shake reduction

Even the steadiest hands don’t compare to a tripod when it comes to image sharpness. Unlike a tripod, though, you always have your hands with you! Sharpen AI’s Stabilize module has been trained to reverse motion blur and make handheld images look like they were taken from a tripod.

Focus: better focus correction

Focus correction is a notoriously difficult problem that’s easy to get wrong, but Sharpen AI’s Focus module excels at correcting up to ten pixels of focus blur. This is perfect for sharpening out-of-focus eyes or correct issues caused by incorrect in-camera focus. Tip: use selective adjustments for best results!

Sharpen: general input sharpening

Even with no motion blur or focus issues, images generally come out of the camera soft. Sharpen AI includes the Sharpen module that specializes in correcting small amounts of general softness without any artifacts or halos.
